Contemporary Abstract Painting "Incidence" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

The title Incidence at the Edges, reflects the design concept of not having the visual entertainment at the perimeters of the design...I often heard, "Don't have incidence at the edges". This rule has gone out of favor with many, and I am one. I often prefer having a quiet meditative space in the middle of the composition.

Mixed Media Assemblage Painting "Release" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

   FRESH OFF THE EASEL....

I finished a shadow box collage that I began months ago with my private art student. Incorporating part of a Taos Mountain watercolor, photo of a Raven, iron grill work, and found objects, the theme of "release", "letting go" emerged

Contemporary Abstract Landscape Painting "The Heart of the Morning" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

I'm happy with the layers I achieved in my Nanaimo, BC workshop demo. Began as a non-objective abstract, the horizontals began to indicate land and the verticals, trees; so I pushed these notions in that direction.

Contemporary Abstract Landscape Painting "Cedar Route" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

I began this workshop demo with how I felt in my red Buick rental car, driving the roads around Nanaimo, BC. , with the huge Cedar Trees lining the roadway dwarfing my existence. I represented this with a small red dot and a very long, tall xerox of trees. I then collaged a bit of the local newspaper to the surface and noticed the word "route" in a byline. When I read it out loud, I realized I was saying "root", which related to the trees.

Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Painting "Previous Chapter" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

I composed a collage of an old book cover, wood pieces, tree bark, and photos of an area where I used to live in Wyoming. These things had been on the work table, so I decided to put them together.

Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Painting "CORTONA MEMORY" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

As I pushed the paint around with no destination in mind, I began to see images of a hill and Cyprus Trees. The emerging shapes reminded me of Cortona, Italy. (I will be teaching there this May.) The warm reddish rust color hinted of rooftops and the warm patina of the ancient city. A pattern of rectangles implied the narrow cobblestone streets, and the quiet shape on the right of the hill could easily represent Santa Margherita Church. My fondness for this Tuscan venue came to life with each brushstroke.

When turned the photo 180 degrees....I liked it even more...it was still Cortona, but at night...the road to the top of the hill had the Cyprus Trees flanking it, the wall around the city was grey and pronounced, and the light at the bottom of the composition seemed to lift the hill higher!

Abstract Mixed Media Painting "The Greatest Thing"" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

   FRESH OFF THE EASEL....

I discovered a very old, very small book titled The Greatest Thing; inside were pages so yellowed and brittle they were falling apart. Purchasing this book at a Secondhand store, I proceeded to tear out and give new life to the aged pages...it was fun to add material to my art that was about the "Greatest Thing". In this collage I have used the actual book cover...and of course titled it, The Greatest Thing. What is the greatest thing? Love?
