Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Botanical Painting 30/30 Challenge "Gilded Spring" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

Day  13 of Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Art Challenge.

Previously this image had an eggplant color in the background. The painting was bold, but just not interesting enough (perhaps it was too bold). The background really overpowered the subtle color changes of the white Tulips. I put silver leafing in the negative spaces (background), glazing it with a combinations of burnt umber and burnt siena oil. Finally, I neutralized some of the brighter hues in the flowers while deepening the dark values.

I really like how the background changes the look of this painting, and how the metal leafing reflects differently depending on the light source.
